oud (agarwood) is one of the most precious and fascinating materials in perfumery, often referred to as “liquid gold, and its harvesting process is as complex and captivating as its scent. Oud comes from the Aquilaria and Gyrinops tree species, native to Southeast Asia — especially Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, India, and Indonesia.
In their normal state, these trees produce light, pale wood with no strong aroma. The magic begins only when the tree becomes infected or wounded — naturally or artificially by a specific type of fungus or bacteria (commonly Phialophora parasitica), it responds by producing a dark, aromatic resin as a defense mechanism. This resin gradually saturates the heartwood, creating the dark, heavy, fragrant substance we know as agarwood or oud.
