Papillon Spell 125 was created by Papillon Artisan Perfumes in 2021. Papillon Spell 125 was created by Liz Moores and has notes of Siberian Pine, White Ambergris, Black Hemlock, Green Sacra Frankincense, Ylang, Indian Sandalwood. This is the EDP, eau de parfum.
Taking its inspiration from the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead, Spell 125 is the final judgement incantation for crossing the underworld, including the heart-weighing ceremony, only the hearts as light as a feather would pass the test of the Gods. Liz Moores is a genius, and something this ambitious in less deft hands would not have lived up to the inspiration. Liz overdelivers. If you have not yet tried a Papillon perfume, this is an excellent place to start, and then slide over to the uber naughty Salome.
Papillon is an artisanal perfume company, handcrafted in small batches from the finest raw materials.
Papillon Spell 125 Reviews
I Scent You a Day - "Spell 125 is about to usurp several classic incense fragrances from their thrones. I'm even going to say that it nudges Comme Des Garcons Series 3 Incense Avignon off the plinth. Until I smelled Papillon Perfumery Spell 125, Avignon had been the last word on incense, but now it has a rival: a rival that (yes, I'm going to say it), bewitches, enchants and beguiles its way, irresistibly, into your perfume collection, as it must."
Stephan Matthews - "Spell 125 opens with an incredible burst of pine, which almost places you on the semi-forested Brocken, but simultaneously there's the scent of oakmoss. This adds to the feeling of a heathland location, and the arrival of a damp stone aroma definitely hints at the Devil's Pulpit and the Witches' Altar. However, you're then plunged into the finest ritualistic frankincense, blended with ylang and clove, which produces a ceremonial accord that is addictively disturbing. Add in a touch of black beeswax candle, alongside tonka bean and sandalwood, and the stage is set for Hexennacht. A final goat-like labdanum hints that the horned Lucifer may be nearby, but I'm sure that Liz Moores will have included a charm to protect us."
A Bottled Rose - "It veers away from the traditional perfumery territory inhabited by previous Papillon releases and leads the wearer to a place seemingly outside of time and space, as if forged in a primordial soup of earth, water, wind and fire, it is arrestingly elemental."
Fragrantica - "Spell 125 goes on a journey that I'm only along for the ride for. The DNA of Papillon is very much there. That human "funk". But it's the funk that makes it relatable. Dryad and Salome have a gorgeous sibling joining their funky bunch. After the "journey" this settles (on me) into a beautiful incense which is both warm, and (weirdly) cool. And green. And deep. And... and..."
Fragrantica - "It's soothing in the way a walk through lush forest and over ancient glacial stones might be, hand in hand with your love, kissing their neck, dewed with a little calescence, a little salt sweat. The pine in this is unbelievable. Inviting, naturalistic, and ephemerally woven with the other ingredients in an extraordinary, diaphanous dancing symphony. I simply can't convey a proper approximation of it beyond that. It's everything good about a wild and dark and fragrant forest tempered with the flame and fine materials and refinements of civilization. It's the stuff of Faerie - a testament to the source and energy of things, held in supreme, joyous balance. Harmonious, above all things. Spell 125 speaks to Papillon's compelling legacy of olfactory storytelling and supreme alchemy. This is art. And it is beautiful to behold."
