D.S. & Durga Big Sur Eucalyptus was released in 2023. Created by David Seth Moltz, it was inspired by the crazy success of their Big Sur After the Rain candle. Deep spicy green groves on the cool California coast, this is a modern day aromatic fougere gem.
Notes: Wet wood, pacific spray, ecualyptus, cardamom, rosemary, magnolia, cypress and dry leaves. It is an Eau de Parfum, EdP.
From the brand - "Our Big Sur After Rain candle is one of our most successful products. People have asked for us to make it as a perfume, but I don't really dig candle oils on the skin. So I took the dominant accord, and many of the same materials and fashioned them into a foggy meditation on coastal California eucalyptus groves that sits wonderfully on the ol' epidermis. Eucalyptus is one of my top five favorite smells in the world. The oil alone cannot encapsulate it's real essence - balmy, green, woody, and deeply spicy. I hope this perfume captures this for all the seekers and tweakers out there."
REVIEWS
Fragrantica - "This is foggy, cliffside Monterey Bay with the cypress and the eucalyptus (whenever I drive past the eucalyptus groves I roll down my window). Definitely a masculine leaning fragrance... The green, camphorous notes come through throughout, but as the fragrance sits the vetiver starts to pull through pretty strongly. I think the vetiver grounds this fragrance and makes it more wearable, particularly as it dries down. This is refreshing and unique (I've never smelled anything like it), and I think it would be a neat signature scent. I can't see myself (as a woman) wearing it, but it would probably work really well on my husband. I love the idea and execution behind this fragrance. A great homage to the northern California coast as an almost photorealistic (and nostalgic) eucalyptus."
Fragrantica - I'm a sucker for real eucalyptus, camphor, turpetine stuff and this is that. Most perfumes with eucalyptus notes tend to smell very synthetic or washed out. This is very realistic eucalyptus, fallen leaves, a bit of gin and cypress vibe and I do pick up on cardamom in the mix. I grew up around Monterey Bay and San Francisco Bay of California and always loved taking in the cold fog air soaked in the eucalyptus and cypress leaves and the decaying medicinal earth - it truly does smell like that. Those who are familiar with those areas will be able to appreciate this."
Fragrantica - "I really enjoy this. I see why people think it smells turpentine-y, and I also can see why it might not be someone's cup of tea. I'm a couple hours in, though, and I really enjoy it - I think the scent that's left on my skin now is very reminiscent of being out on the California coast, and I think that the eucalyptus shines through in a really pleasant way (edit: but note it is STRONG). Monterey is one of my favorite places in the world, and I get a lot of that vibe from this."
Fragrantica - "This has that French Lover sour-musky dry down. They both have a piney, terpenic, bitterness running through their body which FL gets from galbanum and incense, and this gets from what I'm guessing is eucalyptus and maybe rosemary. The opening here feels a litle too lemony-aromatic in an antisceptic way, but it's fresh and invogorating with the heavy camphor.... this is pretty nice and gets better as time goes on as the sharpness fades and I pick up very faint notions of wet wood and earth.... but it's worth a sniff if you're looking for a eucalyptus forward fragrance."
Fragrantica - "Blind bought this because I love the Big Sur after Rain scent. The opening on me smells like menthol, but after a few minutes that goes away and this does smell like the Big Sur after Rain scent (fresh, green, a bit herbal)."
